The time of COVID-19 has been nothing short of lots of change and being in the unknown. Safety and health come first before being able to do anything else. Plus, if COVID-19 has taught us anything, it is to be thankful for what we have and to adapt. We know that there has been a lot of information constantly thrown at you recently, but we want to emphasize the importance of exercising in terms of physical and mental health. Janet Conner, an infection preventionist with North Colorado Medical Center says the short answer to “is it safe to work outside during COVID-19?” is yes.
Exercising outdoors is a great alternative to having access to a gym in order to help keep the body moving, endorphins pumping, and let’s be honest – stay sane. Whether you’re an avid gym-goer, athlete, or have found that you need some sort of outlet during quarantine, here is some information and tips about outdoor fitness!
Getting outside and getting your sweat on can help to switch up your routine / make things more fun. Because typical gym equipment may not be accessible outside, it is time to get creative and really pay attention to how the body works. Make each exercise, set, rep, or cardio count. Try to avoid getting trapped in your head about the potential restrictions of outdoor fitness and looking towards all of the possibilities of moving and learning about your body.
Outdoor workouts are known to help boost moods. The exposure to sunlight enhances vitamin D production and a quick pick-me-up. Physical activity supports the immune system and keeps you towards your goals. It helps to challenge your body in different ways than it normally would in the gym.
Make sure that you acknowledge that outdoor workouts are different, though. Have your water, sunscreen, supportive shoes, and get ready to SWEAT!
