ath·lete
/ˈaTHˌlēt/
Noun
a person trained or gifted in exercises or contests involving physical agility, stamina, or strength; a participant in a sport, exercise, or game requiring physical skill.
Sometimes hearing and using the term “athlete” can be intimidating, to say the least. It’s not too far out of reach to feel like athletes are in this exclusive club, almost like the popular girls in high school with no way of breaking in and that only those who can jump the highest, run the fastest, or throw the hardest can make the cut. Or maybe if you do consider yourself an athlete, it’s something you may feel shy about out of the fear of someone judging your worthiness of the title or making others feel less competent.
But that’s just it. Being an athlete is far more than being proficient in a sport or exercise. It’s about mindset. It’s about challenging yourself, setting goals, and pushing limits. Remember, this doesn’t have to happen all at once, either. It’s not either you are an athlete or you’re not. It can be a process that is probably harder than it looks, but then again most things are. Show up for the athlete you want to be and the strength you know you can have.
Somewhere along the way, we shed things that we’re the most afraid of. Dig deeper and go higher. Take yourself out of the stereotypical athlete box and ignite your own athletic prowess. Write out your definition and live it. Your favorite place doesn’t have to be the field, track, pool, ring, or the gym. Wear what makes you feel the most prepared to let your inner-athlete DO WORK in. The term athlete comes from the Greek root athlein, meaning “compete for a prize”, so why can’t you be that prize?
Activate your athlete. Challenge accepted.
