Does BJJ require that I am in good shape?

When will I get my black belt?
Receiving a black belt is a major achievement and honor that varies based on each person. It typically takes between 8-15 years.
Should I be concerned about safety in BJJ?
BJJ safety is taken to another level. There are specific mat etiquette, programming design and best practices to keep members safe. We don’t mess around with safety.
What is recommended for gear for class?
If you are attending a no-gi class, please wear a rash guard and shorts. However, you are able to wear regular workout clothes. If you are taking a gi class, you must wear a gi.
Is BJJ accessible for everyone?
Absolutely! BJJ is intended for those who are smaller to learn how to defend against someone who is larger. It is a sport that all levels can learn!
How do I pick the right Muay Thai gym for myself?
This is a decision only you can make. We hope that you find value in all classes and one-on-one sessions. It is best you decide what you need out of a gym, program and community first. We take our programming very seriously and are here to support you in whatever way we can.
What is the difference between Muay Thai and MMA?
The sport of Muay Thai uses punches, kicks, knees and elbows that involves clinching. MMA is a grappling sport that combines many different combat sports into one.
What should I focus on as a beginner in Muay Thai?
Begin to develop the relationship with your coach and training partners. Focus on training consistently and nailing down your basic techniques.
Will I get injured?
All of our classes are designed to ensure the safety of our members.
Like other sports, injuries are possible, but we do everything we can to make sure you don’t get injured. Our vigilant coaches are there to supervise and help enforce safety precautions, so you can rest assured that you’re in safe hands.
Please note some instructional classes require additional protective gear to participate.
I haven’t worked out in forever. Do I need to be in shape?
BXNG Muay Thai is for all levels! We ask that you take 5 kickboxing classes first and speak with a coach before taking a beginner's class.
Is Muay Thai good for self-defense?
Muay Thai is a controlled way of learning self-defense with a variety of techniques that are beneficial in potentially threatening situations.
What is Muay Thai?
Muay Thai originated in Thailand as one of the most evolved combat sports. Kicks, punches, knees and elbows are allowed in Muay Thai.
Do I have to meditate during a yoga class?
You are encouraged to do whatever you’d like during class. Some instructors will include a focus on breath or other meditative practices. You do what is comfortable for you, but we do ask you to challenge yourself to do something out of your comfort zone!
What do I need to wear?
We usually recommend standard athletic gear that is most comfortable for you.
Can I eat before class?
We want to make sure that you are nourished before class; however, it is best to leave some time to digest before class. It is usually recommended to wait an hour or so after eating before taking a yoga class.
What do I need to bring?
If you would like to bring your own mat, we encourage you to do that. If not, we have some mats that are available. We recommend bringing water to stay hydrated. Oh.. and yourself!
Am I allowed to take a boxing class and then yoga?
Yes! We love when our members cross-train. Our yoga classes are included in your membership.
How is yoga different from just stretching?
Yoga is different from stretching or warming up by utilizing body movement sequences and breathing techniques to create a mind-body connection.
It’s been a long time since I have done yoga. Will I do okay?
It can always be tricky getting back into the game. We are focused on bringing a class that is tailored to all of our members.
Do I have to be flexible to take a yoga class?
No! But we have a feeling that if you continue to come to yoga class, you will become more flexible.
Do I need cycling shoes in order to take a class?
You do not need cycling shoes to take a class, nor do we have shoes to rent. If you decide to join us for cycling classes regularly, we do recommend investing in some cycling shoes.
What happens if I can’t keep up during class?
The experience is YOURS! You know your body better than anyone else. It’s your ride - so adjust accordingly. Increase or decrease the resistance to whatever you need to push yourself (within reason!).
Is there a way to make the seat more comfortable?
In the beginning, it could take some time to get used to the seat. We’ve all been there. You can wear padded shorts or bring a cushioned seat. Usually, this only lasts a short while for most, and taking extra steps is usually unnecessary.
How many calories will I burn in each indoor cycle class?
It will vary per person, but you’re looking approximately at 500-800 calories per class!
Which locations are Indoor Cycling classes offered?
Our Rancho Bernardo, East Village (near Downtown San Diego) and Solana Beach locations are home to our indoor cycle classes.
How do I sign up for classes?

You need wraps, gloves, water, and yourself to start! Everyone starts somewhere.
Will I learn real kickboxing techniques or is it just a cardio class?
You will learn the fundamental kickboxing techniques while getting an awesome cardio workout. The more you continue in the program, the more technique and combinations you will learn.
I don’t have wraps or gloves.
For your first class, wraps and gloves are on us. After that, you can purchase or rent exclusive BXNG gloves and wraps at the front desk.
I’ve never tried kickboxing before. Will I get hit?
No need to worry about getting hit! This is a cardio-based class, perfect for beginners or advanced students looking to build their endurance.

We all start from somewhere and the most important piece is that you simply start. You do not need to be in good shape to start off, but BJJ will certainly help you reach those goals.
How long does it take to get your black belt?
The journey to a black belt is an admirable one. Each person is unique but the journey usually lasts between 8-15 years.

We take the safety of our members very seriously. Our mat etiquette, class design, and practice processes help to ensure the safety of our students.
What should I wear for my first class?
If it is a no-gi class, we recommend a rash guard and shorts - whatever is the most comfortable for you!
Do I need a gi?
Some classes require a gi, and some do not. We have some extras available and have some BXNG gis for you to purchase!

BJJ is one of the fastest growing martial arts. It is a sport, self-defense system, and fitness program. BJJ focuses on grappling and ground fighting with the goal of getting into a position to make an opponent to submit.
Are HIIT classes included in my membership?
YES! BURN classes are one of our most popular and are included in your membership. If you would like to take training to the next with personal training, there is an additional fee.
Does HIIT burn as many calories as running?
It depends on the length and time of both the HIIT workout and the run. Although, HIIT will help you to continue to burn calories throughout the entire day.
Why should I take HIIT?
Research shows that HIIT helps improve aerobic and anaerobic fitness, increase muscle mass, improve blood pressure/cholesterol levels, cardiovascular health and amp up mood.
How many times a week should I do HIIT / take BURN?
It depends on your activity level, other types of training, and goals but usually 3-4 times a week is recommended.
Who can do HIIT?
Generally, most people are able to do HIIT. If you have any restrictions, please let your coach know.

Work at your own pace, ask questions, and take breaks when needed, and we’re sure you’ll fall in love with boxing in the blink of an eye.
I don’t have any gloves for my first class.
Don’t worry! We’ve got you. Your first class includes wraps and gloves on us. After that, we sell exclusive BXNG gloves and wraps in club, so pop in and let us know what you need.
Will I “tone up” from taking Grit?
Toning up is also a massive misconception in the fitness world. However, taking GRIT classes will help you lose fat and build muscle, which will change your body composition and leave you feeling leaner, fitter, and healthier.
How do I know how much to lift?
Consult with your trainer, and they will help you figure out what weight is appropriate for you.
I’m scared to bulk up. Should I still take Grit?
Bulking up due to strength training is a myth, so don’t let that discourage you from taking part! You should still take part in GRIT sessions if you want to focus on getting stronger - there’s no need to bulk up.

I don’t own a pair of boxing gloves or wraps. Can I borrow some from you?
We will provide you with a pair of gloves and wraps for your first session with us. After that, you are required to bring your own for each class. If you need to borrow some after your first class, a $10 fee for gloves and $5 wraps for each will be charged.

It all depends on comfort, other forms of training, scheduling, etc. We recommend that 3x a week to become more highly skilled and reap the most benefits.
What is the difference between mat Pilates and using equipment?
Mat pilates focuses on Pilates exercises on the floor and requires supporting the body. Pilates equipment gives a frame to work with and the level of difficulty can be adjusted.
Is Pilates included in my membership?
To ensure our ability to keep members safe and provide tailored experiences, we offer private group and one-on-one sessions for an additional fee.

Pilates machines look like a torture device. Why should I try it?
We totally get that pilates machines look like something out of a medieval novel. It is ironic because they can help you look and feel so good. We know they’re intimidating, but we say that it is worth a shot.
